Introduction to Figure Drawing
The purpose of the class is to ground the student in a number of drawing processes and approaches to working from the live model. The first 30 minutes will be dedicated to covering key concepts, followed by two hours of drawing from a live model. Exercises are designed to facilitate an appreciation for and understanding of skeletal structure, muscular anatomy, proportion, and foreshortening. Approaches to drawing the human figure will include exercises in gesture, contour, outline, and tonal modeling of form. Students will progress from working from the nude to draped and clothed models. The overarching goal of this class is to develop perceptual discretion in depicting an accurate representation of the human figure.
In order to familiarize themselves with the general structure of the human body, students are encouraged to buy or borrow an artist focused anatomy book, such as, Fritz Schider’s An Atlas of Anatomy for Artists. The enlarged revised 3rd U.S. edition is still in print and available from most booksellers.
